As our blogger/content curator you will: - Write 20+ news posts (350+ words a piece) a month or 5+ features (1,000+ words a piece) per month. - Stay on top of and report on news and top trends. - Propose your own story ideas and angles based on your knowledge. - Write high-quality, SEO-driven articles about various topics. - Consistently deliver high-quality and professional articles. - Have the ability to stick to deadlines. What you will need to be successful in this role: - Experienced in news writing. For example, please see sites such as Yahoo News, Mashable, HuffPost, NY Post, Any Other Major News Blogs, etc. If you worked with any of these sites or similar sites, it’s a plus. - A background in and passion for writing/blogging, as well as a voice that you’re looking to hone. - Expert in American English and a strong grasp of proper grammar and punctuation (e.g., Strunk & White’s The Elements of Style). Knowledge of AP Style is a plus. It's okay if you are in Australia, UK, Canada, and other countries, as long as you understand how to use American spelling and grammar rules. - The skill to recognize interesting news elements, come up with story ideas, and have these appeal to every kind of reader. - An almost encyclopedic knowledge of celebrities, entertainment, and news trends. - A willingness to learn quickly and adapt to the varying and ever-changing demands of the job. - A working knowledge of search-engine optimization and previous experience using Wordpress is preferred, but not required. You don’t have to be a Wordpress pro but must be able to learn and pick up on some of the repetitive tasks that will be required for each post. Training materials will also be provided, and one on one coaching will become available if needed. - Ability to work a flexible schedule and at a quick pace. Flexible hours are helpful. Many of our writers start in the mornings and then add more work throughout the day. When major breaking stories are being reported flexibility in helping cover those stories is greatly appreciated. - Understanding of DMCA rules. We follow strict guidelines for photo posting and information citations. - Experienced in photo editing. You must understand how to resize images to fit our featured photo area and how to crop images. You don't need to be a photoshop expert, but you MUST understand the very basics of photo editing and resizing. - Experience with creating click-worthy titles. The ideal candidate will also be familiar with creating titles that get clicks. Think Buzzfeed or Upworthy type titles. This position is a contractual position where we pay based on performance, with the opportunity to eventually become a part of our staff. Writers are paid on a sliding scale based on the number of articles they complete on average. Along with our GUARANTEED PAY PER ARTICLE structure, we offer one of the industries best CPM models (money earned per 1,000 Page Views) and bonuses that incrementally increase based on generated Pageviews. The Urban Twist is an approved Google News and Bing News source that offers our contributors a starting commission rate of $1 per 1,000 views, which immediately jumps up to $3 per 1,000 views once certain criteria are met. We also offer bonuses for doing extra work such as ed/op columns, reviews, on-the-ground reporting, and interviews. For those that already are familiar with how Google and Bing news networks operate and especially if you’re familiar with basic SEO principles, there is massive income potential with The Urban Twist. SPECIAL NOTE FOR SEASONED ONLINE WRITERS: If you write for a major publication and you bring your own reader base to the table, please email our editor Brennen Jones directly at brennenjones [at] TheUrbanTwist.com to propose a counteroffer to our starting rates. We offer a very competitive performance based package and are willing to entertain discussions for your services. If you have a large social media following of readers who specifically visit your pages to read what you write, you will likely receive very nice bonuses for your posted work. We never cap earnings and our bonuses on top of CPM pay can be very lucrative for writers who bring their own readers to the table.
